Optimising Air Quality in a Primary School in Galway
A Galway primary school contacted Healthy Homes Ireland after teachers noticed a persistent feeling of stuffiness and reduced alertness among pupils. The school was concerned about the learning environment and suspected that poor ventilation may have been a contributing factor.
Our team conducted indoor air quality monitoring, with a focus on CO₂ levels throughout the day. Several classrooms were found to exceed recommended thresholds, particularly in the afternoons. This prompted immediate action, as high CO₂ can directly impact cognitive performance and comfort.
We recommended practical upgrades, including improved cross ventilation and the use of real-time CO₂ monitors to guide ventilation practices. Teachers reported a notable improvement in air freshness and pupil concentration within weeks, highlighting how small changes can make a big difference in school environments.
